TRENDNet TVP-SP1BK ClearSky Skype Phone

The TRENDNet TVP-SP1BK VoIP phone also features Bluetooth 2.0. From the news release:
TRENDnet, a best-in-class networking manufacturer of wired and wireless networking solutions announced its latest VoIP innovation, the ClearSky VoIP Bluetooth Phone with Bluetooth Adapter (TVP-SP1BK) for Skype(TM). The new handset kit allows Skype(TM) users to chat at home, in their office or on the road without having to stay in front of their computer.
The kit includes a wireless handset and Bluetooth adapter to ensure compatibility and seamless voice clarity. The handset follows the traditional button behavior of a traditional handset, but also supports all of the popular Skype(TM) standard functions such as Contacts, Call List, SkypeOut, Conference Call, etc. Furthermore, the TVP-SP1BK comes with a long-life rechargeable Lithium-ion battery able to sustain up to 6 hours talk time and over 60 hours on standby.
The included TBW-104UB USB Bluetooth 2.0 Adapter supports Enhanced Data Range (EDR) to simultaneously communicate with other Bluetooth 2.0 compliant devices at high speed such as digital cameras, PDA’s, mobile phones, printers, keyboards, etc. The adapter supports Class 1 radio technology to help extend coverage distance up to 100 meters adding more distance and performance than normal Bluetooth adapters.
“Skype(TM) has become a preferred VoIP service for a large segment of our customer base worldwide,” stated Heath Gregory, Marketing Director for TRENDnet. “Up till now most users have used wired headsets or USB attached handsets. By using Bluetooth we deliver a wireless connection that can seamlessly coexist with 802.11b/g devices and ultimately improve their Skype(TM) user experience.”

TRENDNet ClearSky Skype Phone Reviews
The Inquirer has a review of the Trendnet Clearsky Skype phone, and is not particularly impressed with the phone. The reviewer experienced problems connecting the phone to Skype, although the Bluetooth installation wasn’t a problem. It took downloading the drivers directly from Trendnet’s website to solve that issue. Once hooked up to Skype: “Call quality was acceptable, but we frequently experienced short bursts of interference, especially when moving round the house while making a call.”
ComputerActive reviews the TrendNet ClearSky and notes, “Installation threw up a few problems, but by downloading the latest drivers from the TrendNet website, we were able to remedy these. Each time Skype is fired up, you’ll need to hit the Contacts button on the phone to download your Skype address book.” The conclusion? “For a device that does so much, it’s very easy to set up. A great way to set up multiple phone extensions with individual internet telephone numbers.”
Trusted Reviews reviews the TRENDnet ClearSky Bluetooth Skype phone, and finds that it’s a bit expensive for what is quite a simple device: “The Trendnet ClearSky (TVP-SP1BK) is very easy to set up and I found the audio quality to be satisfactory for phone calls. The slow interface is a real downside, but you can initiate the phone call from within Skype itself which is a lot faster. However, this begs the question of whether a handset is even needed. If you are going to use Skype itself to control the phone aspect of things – why not just use a Bluetooth headset? Not only are these cheaper, but it could also be used with a mobile phone when away from the desk.”
TechDigest has a review of the TRENDnet ClearSky VoIP phone and writes, “The Bluetooth capability moves Skype forward another leap, freeing the caller from the computer, and making it more feasible as a main family phone. This particular dongle is also compatible with most other Bluetooth devices, such as printers, PDAs and cameras, so will be a useful addition to any computer. … However, the downside is whilst it’s excellent at the Skype bit, it’s not so good for your bog-standard, non-VoiP phone calls.”
